As a reporter for the Black Rock Beacon, I have chosen this project to do an art review for the paper. Can you get in touch to discuss progress? Thanks Deb

Welcome to the Goldberg Collective

------------Project postponed for next year.---------

The Goldberg Collective wants YOU!

We are a group of artists, engineers and inventors whose mission is to build an interactive, kinetic sculpture at Burning Man, 2009. Participation is open to anyone, anywhere, and our activities are coordinated via this web site.

The sculpture is entitled "Grace in Motion", a modular Rube Goldberg Machine of indefinite length. Individuals and teams each produce their own Module, a self contained Rube Goldberg Machine conforming to a common Specification. How your Module works is entirely up to you! Modules are assembled on-site, end to end, one triggering the next. Any event attendee may re-set the machine and start it.

The end result of the machine's operation is an original Haiku.

If you would like to read more about the project, see the Documentation tab, where you will find Site Usage Guidelines and Project Documentation.

Some images can be found here and here.

Q: How will the cubes be attached?
A: Each module must be securely anchored to the ground, so they don't actually have to be attached to each other.

Q: Will power be provided for night time lighting?
A: No power will be provided.  This is a day time attraction.  Solar garden lights should suffice for night time visibility.

Crowd-sourcing the Live Size Mousetrap

An excellent real world example of a Rube Goldberg Machine is the Life Size Mousetrap.

This is a kinetic sculpture modeled after the 1963 Hasbro plastic board game by the same name, and has been assembled at Burning Man among other arts and crafts festivals around the country.

More photos and information about it can be found on flickr, this blog, that… Continue

What will Grace in Motion look like?

Here are a few quick wire frame drawings to give you the general picture. You don't actually have to frame your cube, but this is the recommended way to string your pendulum.
